How to use the Align Tool in Autodesk Revit

The Align tool in Revit is one of those simple yet powerful features that can save you time and keep your project organised. Whether you’re aligning walls, doors, windows or any other elements, this tool makes it easier to create precise relationships between your components. Let’s take a look at how to use the Align tool.

  • Open Revit, draw some walls as shown in the below image. You can use any wall type for this.
  • Go to the Modify tab and click on the Align button (or type AL as the shortcut). Make sure the Lock check box is selected.
  • As in all commands in Revit, keep your eye on the bottom left of the screen. Revit guides you as to what you need to do as you go.
  • As Revit is prompting, you need to select line or point reference for alignment. So, select the align TO and then we select the align WHAT. Select the lower edge of the wall as shows in the below image.
  • Now select an entity to align (it will move into alignment with the reference), as the prompt suggests at the bottom left of your screen, shown in the below image.

As a result, the two walls are now aligned. The padlock icon indicates that these walls are locked (from the check box we set earlier), meaning if you move one wall, the other will adjust automatically to maintain the alignment. If you want to remove this connection, simply select the second wall and click the padlock to unlock it, breaking the connection.

  • Now let’s try the Multiple Alignment. Select Align, and check the Multiple Alignment box.
  • Select the upper horizontal edge of the wall, as shown in the below image, as your reference line.
  • Then select the other upper edges of the walls as shown below.

As a result, all the upper walls are now aligned.

With the same process, you can try this for doors, windows and many other Revit elements.

The Align Tool is an indispensable feature for maintaining precision in your Revit projects. By mastering this simple tool, you can ensure that your elements are always where you need them, speeding up your design process and keeping your model organised. Whether you’re aligning walls, components or grid lines, the Align tool helps create a cleaner, more efficient workflow.
