Revit Work Planes

What is a Revit work planes, and what are they used for? Work planes in Revit are what we work on. Is you model, measure or modify anything, you are doing so on a work plane. Most of the time, when you are working in a plan view, you don’t notice this, as the work plane will be set to the plane the view is on, such as the 2nd floor. For example, in a 3D view, you may need to specify the work plane you want to work on in Revit.

Viewing your Work Plane

You can visually turn on a representation of the work plane by using the Show button on the Work Plane group. This can be found on some ribbon bar tabs, such as the Architecture tab:

With this turned on, a blue work plan will appear in view:

Changing the Work Plane

To change the current work plane, there are 2 methods.

Method 1

Expand the Set button on the Work Plane group and left-click the Pick A Plane button:

Now in the ‘pick a plane’ mode, left-click on the face of an object you want to make the current plane:

Method 2

Again, expand the Set button on the Work Plane group, and this time, left-click the Set Work Plane button:

This will open the Work Plane window. Choose an existing reference from the Name dropdown. such as grid or level, to set the work plane to, and click OK.
