Revit – Add Text to Families

Want to be able to add text to your Revit Families but you don’t know how? Adding text is easy if you know how, your first call of port might be to simply use the text tool in the family editor however this is just going to add the text as notes in the editor and it isn’t going to display in side a project.

So how do we get that text to display?

When creating Families we can do something known as nesting Families, simply put this is when a family is inserted into another family. By creating the text in a different family template and nesting it into the family we want the text to appear against, we can achieve our goal.

So which family template do we choose?

Good question, when you start a new family in Revit and you are presented with a list of family template files to choose from, you also have a number of folders, one of which is called “Annotations”. In this folder you want to use “Metric Generic Annotation”. This family allows your text to appear inside the project, just remember to delete the note which already exists in the template or that will appear too.

By creating your text here and saving, you can nest this family into your main family.

So how do we nest?

Simple… just insert the family into your other family as though it was a project. Just go to the Insert tab and click load family. Then place your text family using either the components tool on the create tab, or through the Families category in the Project Browser.

Save and load your main family into your project and you should now be able to see your text.
