How to use the Flip Tool in Revit Family Editor

When creating custom families in Revit, you may want to include the Flip Controls commonly found in many default families. Let’s walk through how to add these Flip Tools to a new family. We’ll start with a simple example:

  • Open a new Revit family.
  • Select the Metric Generic Model and click Open.
  • In the Create tab on the ribbon, select Extrude.
  • Using the Line command,
  • Draw up something like the below around the provided reference planes, as shown below:
  • Add dimensions as required. Here we have used the default 250 for the depth.
  • In the Create tab, under Control Panel select Control.
  • Make sure the Activate is active.
  • Select Double Horizontal, and place next to the geometry as below.
  • Now add the Double Vertical as below.
  • Save your Family.
  • If we change to the 3D view, you should see something like the below image.
  • Open a New Project – Architecture Temple
  • Go back to the Family, select Load into Project, and select the project you just started. Here we will test the Flip function.
  • On the ribbon under Architecture, select Component and select your family you saved.
  • Place in your model and push the spacebar on your keyboard to see if the object flips as per the flip controls we added. You can also place one and click on the flip controls displayed to the test.

With flip controls added, your custom Revit families become more intuitive and versatile. Use this technique in future family builds to streamline placement and improve the user experience.
