Isolate and Hide Objects in AutoCAD

AutoCAD is an incredibly powerful tool for drafting and designing, used by architects, engineers and designers across industries. One of its many useful features is the ability to manage object visibility, allowing users to focus on specific parts of a drawings. Two essential tools for controlling what you see in AutoCAD are Isolate and Hide. While both can help declutter your workspace, they function differently and have unique use cases.

In this blog we’ll break down how to Isolate and Hide objects in AutoCAD, when to use each features and how these tools can improve your workflow.

What does it mean to Isolate and Hide objects in AutoCAD?

Before diving into the specifics, it’s important to understand the distinction between Isolate and Hide:

  • Isolate: This command temporarily hides everything in your drawing except the objects you want to focus on. It’s like having a magnifying glass for a single object or set of objects. When you isolate an object, all other objects disappear from the drawing view, allowing you to work with only the items you need. Once you’re done, you can restore the visibility of all objects with a simple command.
  • Hide: The Hide command, on the other hand, allows you to hide specific objects without affecting the rest of the drawing. The objects you hide remain invisible until you unhide them. However, the key difference is that the hidden objects are still part of the drawing, you’re just not viewing them at that time while hidden. Let’s dive into how to use these commands effectively.

How to Isolate Objects in AutoCAD

  • Open a drawing in AutoCAD. I have opened a sample DWG, but you can use any DWG you already have.
  • Select the objects: Select the objects you want to isolate. You can select individual objects or multiple objects by clicking on the object, using the selecting windows or by selecting one object, right clicking and click Select Similar.
  • Use the Isolate command: Type ISOLATEOBJECTS into the command line and press enter. Alternatively, you can right-click after selecting your objects and click the Isolate Objects option in the popup dialog box.
  • AutoCAD will hide all other objects except the ones you selected. You’ll see only the isolated objects.

Isolating objects can be incredibly helpful when you’re dealing with complex drawings that contain many layers and components. By isolating objects, you can reduce distractions and focus on a smaller area of your design.

  • Exit Isolation Mode: To return to your previous view with all object visible, type ENDISOLATE into the command line and press enter. Alternatively, use the right click option and click End Object Isolation in the popup dialog box.

Bonus Tips for Using the Isolate Command

Isolate by layer: If you’re working with large-scale drawings and want to isolate a specific layer of objects, you can use the Layer Isolate tool. This will temporarily isolate all objects on a selected layer whilst hiding the rest.

Stay Organised: Isolating objects is more effective when your drawing is organised into layers. It’s much easier to isolate groups of objects if they’re organised by layer or type of object.

How to Hide Objects in AutoCAD

Sometimes, you need to hide specific objects to make your design clearer or to reduce visual clutter. The Hide command is perfect for this. It allows you to remove objects from view temporarily.

  • Select the Objects: Select the objects you want to hide, you can select individual objects or multiple objects, by clicking on the objects using the selecting windows or by selecting one object, right clicking and Select Similar.
  • Use the Hide Command: Type HIDE into the command line and press enter. Alternatively, right-click the selected objects and choose the Hide option from the popup dialog box.
  • Unhide the Objects: To bring back the hidden objects, type UNHIDE into the command line and press enter. You can also right click and select End Objects Isolation.

Bonus Tips for Using the Hide Command

Use Layers for More Control: If you’re working with layers, hiding an entire layer is an efficient way to declutter the drawing. Simply freeze the layer visibility by clicking the sun icon in the Layers panel.

Mastering the Isolate and Hide commands in AutoCAD is crucial for anyone who works with complex drawings. These tools can greatly improve your workflow by allowing you to focus on specific parts of your design and eliminate visual clutter. By isolating or hiding objects, you can streamline your work, whether you’re making edits, adding new elements or simply trying to understand a particular section of a larger project.

In short, both commands serve to enhance your ability to work efficiently in AutoCAD, giving you the flexibility to control visibility in ways that suit your design process.
