Autodesk Vault Custom Objects

Autodesk Vault Custom Objects

You have probably noticed these things in Autodesk Vault for a few years now or heard and seen people talking about them in forums but never really understood what exactly they are… what am I talking about? Custom Objects.

Edit and Manage Custom Object Definitions

So what exactly is a “Custom Object” and how can they benefit me and my design team?
Custom Objects allow Vault administrators to create new entities to meet the needs of their team, organization, or company. Therefore, administrators can create a Custom Object definition and assign it categories, lifecycles, and properties. Once the definition is created, users can create instances of that custom object directly through the user interface.
A Custom Object is a table of information residing in the SQL database that allows you to manage lists and collections of information directly in the Vault interface. Allowing for all of your data to be managed in one central location.

For Example, creating task lists with drawing assignments and project reviewal.
Creating contact lists and using them to be assigned to the above tasks and/or link them to other files or other contacts.
Creating RFQ and RFI containers of files and you could even create sequential drawing numbers.

I suppose that’s the reason they are called CUSTOM objects – you can customise them to be what you want.

Some of the benefits involve linking engineering files together and being able to track these custom objects with categories, lifecycles and even apply security to them.
